The town is divided into two distinct parts - the mountains and the sea, the latter being ideal for sun seekers, water sports fans or for scuba divers keen on underwater archaeology! The regions perfect climate is the reason people flock to the Ionian coast - even in winter, temperatures are mild.
Monasterace treasures its food and Calabria is the garden of Italy, so the emphasis is on fresh locally caught fish and seafood, fresh locally grown fruit and vegetables (dishes featuring mushrooms, peas, beans and pasta are popular) but you will find that spicy salami, hot peppers, sweet sun dried tomatoes, almonds, oranges and delicious fresh bread feature on menus everywhere.
